HAMBANTOTA, Sri Lanka, October 9 (Xinhua) -- The First South Asian Beach Games was robbed of some of its glamour when the organizers were forced to remove two sports of body building and triathlon due to lack of participation.

At the last minute, six events in body building had to be removed after Sri Lankan body builders were found guilty of doping, which resulted in not having required number of teams to hold the competition. Triathlon also had to be removed as there were no sufficient number of teams.

The one-week long first ever South Asian Beach Games is to be held from October 8 to 14 and it will consist of 10 sports of netball, handball, kabaddi, football, basketball, surfing, swimming, life saving, volleyball and equestrian.

All eight South Asian nations of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Afganistan, Maldives, Bhutan and hosting Sri Lanka with their 359 sports personnel are taking part in the inaugural beach games in South Asia.

With the biggest contingent of 110 players, the host nation is to give a close fight to India with its 90 participants and Pakistan with its 56 players. Bhutan with four beach basketball players is the smallest contingent.

The 2004 tsunami hit Southern coastal city Hambantota, which is also bidding for the 2018 Commonwealth Games against Australia's Gold Coast, was selected as the venue for the first South Asian Beach Games 2011.
