China to donate food to quake-hit Japan

BEIJING - China Charities Aid Foundation for Children annoucned Friday that it had decided to donate emergency food aid worth of one million yuan (about $150,000) to Japan's quake stricken areas.

The foundation said it notified the Japanese Red Cross Society about its decision on Tuesday. At the request of the Japanese side, the foundation has been organizing the purchase of foodstuffs most needed in Japan.

"The food will soon be delivered to Japan," said the foundation in a statement.

A 9.0-magnitude quake jolted off the northeast coast of Japan's main island of Honshu on March 11, triggering a devastating tsunami and more than 6,900 deaths.
