US Secretary of State: US stands by one-China policy
The one-China policy is a stance upheld by both US Democrats and Republicans, US Secretary of State John Kerry told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday.
The one-China policy is based on the three joint communiqués between the US and China, Kerry said on the phone call to Wang. The communiqués, issued in the 1970s and 1980s, laid the restoration framework for the China-US diplomatic relationship.
The US-China relationship is of great importance as the two countries have cooperated in areas including global economic recovery, climate change and major international issues, he added.
Mentioning that the Sino-US relationship is undergoing a transitional period, Wang said both sides need to work together to keep bilateral ties going in the right direction.
The cooperative fruits between China and US are precious, Wang said, adding that both countries should cherish previous achievements.
Kerry and Wang also exchanged views on global and regional issues concerning both sides.
