Expert contends book had impact on civil war

The School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London is hosting a lecture about the War of Liberation (1946-49) on Thursday. Civil War China will be presented by Hans van de Ven, from the University of Cambridge, and is set for the university's Paul Webley Wing in Torrington Square, London. The talk will focus on military aspects and explore how the book On War by Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz may have been understood and developed by the Communists.

Ceramics characters make movie magic

The China Exchange will screen the short film Mr Sea between Friday and Nov 12. The film was created by Chinese artist Geng Xue, who adapted the story from The Tales of Liaozhai, a novel about ghosts set during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The story features a scholar and a prostitute who live in a wasteland. The film's characters are made from ceramics. The movie is being shown at 32a Gerrard Street in London.

Midlands opportunities on the table

The Birmingham China Business Forum will host Kicking Of : Chinese Real Estate Investment in the Midlands on Thursday. The event at Weightmans on Temple Row in Birmingham will include a discussion about the growing opportunities for companies in the Midlands to attract Chinese investment. The session is aimed at UK business people wanting to learn more about the Chinese market and Chinese entrepreneurs who would like to find out about property investment opportunities in the UK. Guest speakers will include property developer Richard Brown, entrepreneur Li Yifeng, and local lawyers who will speak about recent changes to the UK's property tax laws.
