Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei and the University of Reading's Henley Business School launched a training academy on Wednesday, which will teach students information and communications technology based on Huawei's own technology.

The Huawei Authorized Information Network Academy (HAINA), which is based at the University of Reading, will initially focus on teaching Huawei's employees, suppliers and customers and in the process help them to better use Huawei's technology, but in the long run also it will extend its program to other students. The students will receive Huawei-branded certification at the end of their studies.

Liu Kecheng, Head of Business Informatics, Systems and Accounting at Henley Business School, said the partnership with Huawei is strategically important for his team at the university.

"Firstly, because Huawei has a lot of technical expertise to share with us in the programs, and will provide technical support to us for the training programs, this will help to enhance the quality of our offerings," he said.

"Secondly, because Huawei's executives, suppliers and clients wish to receive training, this will secure good numbers of students to our training programs."

Liu said that the association with Huawei will also help the university's programs to build a good reputation. "And because we are a prestigious business school with history dating back to 1945, the programs will also help Huawei enhance its own reputation."

Initially, the program will train industry executives who have a need to use Huawei technology in their jobs, including Huawei executives, clients and suppliers.

But over time the program will be broadened to other practitioners and managers in information technology and telecommunication, including students at the university. Although they do not immediately need to use Huawei technology, the fact they have the extra certificate awarded to them with on the programs would enhance their employability in the job market, Liu said.

In addition to the cooperation to deliver training, Huawei and Henley Business School will be conducting research. Currently Henley Business School already conducts research in several areas which are collectively called SMACI (social media, mobile technology, analytics, cloud computing and internet of things). It then applies these to business operations in the fields such as healthcare, finance, smart city and digital enterprise.

Liu said that Huawei is also very interested in the complementarity that Henley can bring in the use of these technologies.

"Huawei has great expertise on the technical side, and Henley Business School has expertise in how to apply this technology into business operations, and work of Henley Business School can in applying the products of the joint research into businesses, which can help Huawei attract clients that wish to use their technology, including hardware and equipment."

Liu said Huawei is an innovative company that is very keen to focus on research and development. "In my view, Huawei has the unique advantage of knowing its strength and use its core competitiveness to enhance its position in the world market."

He said Huawei has two unique advantages in his view. One is responsiveness, meaning the ability to implement solutions very quickly, and the second is being customer-centric, meaning to provide highly customized solutions to satisfy clients' needs.

Huawei has provided half a million pounds worth of equipment to the academy, and it also provides technical experts to train the university's staff, who will then deliver lessons to the students.

HAINA will provide training for 10 groups of students in the first year of its launch, and each group would consist of just over 10 students.
