SINGAPORE -- Three people, including one Chinese, were killed when a Singapore-registered barge sank off Batam on Friday night, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said on Sunday.

Nine people were on board when the barge, Posh Mogami, sank north-east Sekupang. Among the deaths, one is Chinese, while the other two include a Singaporean and a Myanmarese. The Indonesian authorities rescued the other six, according to the MPA.

The barge was built in China in 2012 and owned by a Singapore company, according to Indonesian news outlet the Jakarta Post.

The semi-submersible barge was carrying out submerging trials when the accident happened. The MPA is investigating the cause of the incident.
