CARACAS - Thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets in the capital of Caracas Sunday to show support for President Hugo Chavez who is recovering in Cuba after a surgery on a cancerous tumor.

Governmental officials, leaders of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), and lawmakers were among the marchers.

The demonstration ended with speeches made by Vice President Elias Jaua, members of the ruling PSUV, local leaders and youth leaders.

Jaua talked about Chavez's leadership and said Chavez remained in power although he is in Cuba.

According to the Venezuelan Constitution, the president can be absent for 90 days and the period can be extended for three more months if the National Assembly approves it.

Chavez is in Havana, the Cuban capital, recovering from the removal of a cancerous tumor, which was discovered after he had another surgery to remove a pelvic abscess on June 10.

"I see you, I hear you, I'm living you! Let's say with Bolivar, 200 years later: to hesitate is to lose ourselves. We will overcome, my youngsters!" Chavez wrote in his Twitter account Sunday.
