100,000 police to guard polling in Thailand

BANGKOK - Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen said Tuesday that the police would assign 98,431 policemen to guard 90, 854 polling booths nationwide on the July 3 election.

In addition, over 70,000 officers including some 4,200 men from commandos unit and about 31,000 from Traffic Police Department have also been prepared for the voting.

Regarding the 918 officers providing security for 428 MP candidates, Pongsapat said that those officers would guard the MP candidates until July 7.

The first general election after political turmoil in 2009 and 2010 is scheduled to be held on July 3 when some 47.3 million eligible voters will pick up 500 MPs -- 375 from constituency- based system and 125 from party-list.
