At least 24 killed in storms in N India

NEW DELHI -At least 24 people were killed in dust storms in various districts across the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh Saturday, said police.

A total of 11 people, including four children, were killed in the state's Lakhimpur district in incidents of house collapse and uprooting of trees as a dust storm accompanied by high velocity wind hit the area.

Four persons were killed in Lakhimpur and Gola while two deaths have taken place in Mohammadi and Dharaura areas. In Shahjahanpur district, at least seven people were killed in a dust storm related incidents.

Meanwhile, the state government has announced a compensation of 100,000 rupees ($2,000) each for the kin of those killed in the dust storms.
