LONDON - British Treasury minister Danny Alexander on Friday said the coalition government must stick to a four-year austerity programme despite his Liberal Democrat party's poor showing in local elections.

"The task for the whole coalition is to carry on, to stick to the task, to deliver on the plans that were set out, particularly to deliver on the plan for the economy," he told Sky News.

"We have to stick to the plan over the next four years," added Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

The Liberal Democrats are the junior partner in Britain's coalition government. Their poor performance in local council elections and tensions with their Conservative partners over a referendum on a new voting system had strained the partnership, leading to fears of a split.
