BOGOTA - At least 768 violations of international humanitarian law occurred during 2010 in Colombia, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Thursday
"While the situation improved in some areas, people from various departments of the country continue to suffer the consequences of actions and armed clashes," Christophe Beney, the head of the ICRC delegation in Colombia, said at a press conference.
The ICRC also said that more than 180,000 people who have been affected by the over 40 year-long continuing armed conflict have received help or direct support by the ICRC last year.
Another 700,000 people including people from remote locations benefited from the building of new infrastructure while community leaders had received training in how to give first aid.
"All the victims should receive prompt attention without discrimination. We are concerned about the humanitarian consequences of action not only of the parties in conflict, but also the consolidation of new armed groups," said Beney.
Illegally armed groups in Colombia primarily involved with the drug trade and organized crime have become an increasing security challenge to the government of Colombia in recent years.
