Gbagbo has also called for an end to armed combats between his camp and that of his rival who is Cote d'Ivoire's internationally recognized president, Alassane Ouattara.

The pro-Ouattara forces had launched an offensive against Gbagbo's residence which had earlier been bombarded by the UN and French Licorne forces.

"I would wish to appeal that we put down our weapons and end this conflict through dialogue," Gbagbo said.
