SEOUL - South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) are set to meet next week to discuss volcanic activities at Mount Baekdu, the unification ministry in Seoul said Thursday.

The DPRK proposed last week inter-Korean talks on possible volcanic eruptions of the mountain, the country's highest mountain on the border with China.

South Korea, in response, suggested Tuesday a meeting be held on March 29 in the South Korean border city of Munsan, which Pyongyang accepted earlier Thursday. The DPRK delegation will include an official at a research center on volcanoes, according to the unification ministry.

Observers here have said the talks might help thaw frozen inter-Korean relations.
