Troops capture militant leader in S Afghanistan

KABUL - Afghanistan- and NATO-led forces during operation detained a Taliban local leader in Taliban birthplace Kandahar province in Afghanistan's troubled southern region, a press release of military alliance said on Thursday.

"International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed today, a Taliban leader was detained during an Afghan and coalition operation in Kandahar province on Feb 28." ISAF said in the press release.

The Taliban leader operated in the Jalai district where he led attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, it further added.

Without revealing the arrested man, the press release stressed that he was responsible for coordinating Taliban operations and facilitating weapons and supplies to Taliban sub-leaders and fighters.

Taliban militants fighting Afghanistan- and NATO-led troops have yet to make comments.
