MANAMA - Two Bahraini protesters were killed and dozens wounded in clashes with anti-riot policemen who were trying to disperse anti-government protesters in the Pearl Square in central Manama on Thursday, Doha-based Al-Jazerra TV reported.

The iconic square has become a focal point for protests triggered after the death of two protesters earlier this week.

The interior ministry said the security forces evacuated the Pearl Square after it has exhausted all chances of dialogue with protesters.

"Some heeded and quietly left while the others refused to comply with the law. This required an intervention to disperse them," the official news agency BNA quoted ministry spokesman General Tarek al-Hassan as saying.

Hoping to build on the momentum generated by the anti-government protests in Tunisia and Egypt, thousands of Bahrain demonstrators had been occupying the square since Tuesday after the death of two young demonstrators in clashes with police.
