Afghan, NATO to review developments, security

KABUL - In efforts to ensure durable security for northern region of the war-torn Afghanistan, Afghan and NATO military officials have met in a conference to discuss the issue, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Senior Afghan civil and military leaders met in a conference at Afghan National Army Camp Shaheen on Jan 2 to outline the way forward in security, governance and socio-economic development in northern Afghanistan." the statement said.

In the conference, according to statement, the officials were informed and briefed on Operation Omid 1390 by planners from Afghan and Regional Command North military offices.

Supported by ISAF, operation Omid 1390, which means "hope" in Dari language, provides guidline from Afghan gov't to Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) in order to achieve security, good governance and socio-economic developments over the next 18 to 24 months, the statement further said.

"We continue to get better and better," said US Army Lt. Gen. David M. Rodriguez, commander, ISAF Joint Command in the statement.

The necessity for joint-cooperation between Afghans and ISAF was stressed by German Army Maj. Gen. Hans-Werner Fritz, commander, ISAF in the North of the war-torn country.

The previously peaceful Afghan northern provinces, have been experiencing Taliban-led militancy over the past one year.

Taliban militants who staged a bloody comeback four years ago in their traditional hotbed south Afghanistan have been attempting to destabilize northern provinces.
