Taliban kill 8 police in northern Afghan province

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan - Taliban militants raided a police checkpoint in Qalai Zal district of northern Kunduz province early Monday and killed eight policemen, an official said.

"The rebels attacked a local police force checkpoint in Chargul village of Qalai Zal distict in the wee hours of today and killed seven local police and a personnel of national police," acting-provincial governor Hamdullah Danishi told Xinhua.

Afghan Local Police, established months ago is a community police defending their villages against Taliban attacks.

The official also said the militants had fled the scene in fear of police retaliation.

In the neighboring Imam Sahib district, on Saturday an explosive device planted by militants on motorbike went off in a bazaar killing eight people and injuring 18 others, almost all civilians.

Kunduz and neighboring Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan has been the scene of Taliban-led activities since early this year.
