Militants fired girl school in Afghan province

PUL-E-ALAM, Afghanistan - Anti-government militants set on fire a girl school in Logar's provincial capital Pul-e-Alam, 60 km south of Afghan capital Kabul early Thursday, a local official said.

"Armed militants came to a girl school in the wee hours of today and after overpowering and tying the hands of two guards of the school set on fire the school building and badly damaged it," head of education department in the province Abdul Mateen Jafar told Xinhua.

He blamed Taliban insurgents for the attack.

Taliban fighters who had banned education for girls and confined women to houses during their reign collapsed in late 2001 have yet to make comment.
