HANOI, Vietnam -- The death toll from heavy rains in central Vietnam has risen to 21, with eight people missing.
Disaster officials said Monday that up to 31.5 inches (800 millimeters) of rain have fallen on the region, which is still recovering from devastating floods earlier this month _ over the past few days, forcing the evacuation of 126,000 people.
An official said that about 300 soldiers have been deployed to rush instant noodles, rice and water to people affected by the floods.
Floods earlier this month killed 66 people and left 17 missing in Vietnam's central region. Typhoon Megi could add to the misery, with more rains forecast for the region in the coming days.
