SYDNEY - Sydney has been acknowledged as one of the world's best cities for events and festivals at a ceremony in the United States.

The Australia's harbor city was named best city in the 'over 1 million population' category at the inaugural International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) awards in Saint Louis on Thursday.

Australia's New South Wales Major Events Minister Kevin Greene said, the judging panel had noted the city's success in hosting major events such as the Sydney Olympics, New Year's Eve, and cultural festival of Vivid Sydney.

"The international panel of judges recognised Sydney's major events and cultural assets as integral to the city's attractiveness as a place to live and work and visit," Greene said.

"It is one of the world's best-known city brands, boasting countless renowned attractions and internationals icons."
