The students, summoned by a student coordinating assembly, were asking the government to abolish the general education law, develop national education and provide free public transport for Chilean students.

It was the third student demonstration in two weeks.

"We students will not give up unless the government promises to fulfill our demands," student leader Victoria Cardenas said.

The government said it was ready for negotiations but students rejected the idea.
