MOSCOW - A second major terrorism attempt in a week was foiled when police defused an improvised explosive device in Russia's turbulent North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, the Interior Ministry said Saturday.
The device was later destroyed by sappers, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.
A similar explosive device placed near a food store in the neighboring Komsomolskoye village a few days ago was also defused.
An investigation into both bombing attempts is underway in a bid to identify those responsible and whether the attempts are linked.
Violence is common in Russia's North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, with militants frequently targeting police and officials as representatives of Russian authorities.
Moscow said it would tackle the problem of unemployment, clan rivalry and corruption in the region as the causes of the violence.
