SHANGHAI - Google Inc said on Friday the firm's report that web searches in China were being blocked could have been the result of its own technical glitch that overstated the problem.

Google said on Thursday that Web searches and mobile services were blocked in China, according to a message on the company's website.

However, the firm released an updated statement saying that the report of a full blockage could have been because of a technical glitch.

"Because of the way we measure accessibility in China, it's possible that our machines can overestimate the level of blockage," Google said in an emailed statement.

"That appears to be what happened last night when there was a relatively small blockage. It appears now that users in China are accessing our properties normally," the firm said.
