MANILA -- The death toll caused by Typhoon Conson has reached 23 as of early Thursday in the Philippines, said the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

Of all the victims, three were from central Luzon region, 17 were from southwestern Luzon and the other three were from southeastern Luzon, NDCC said in a statement, adding that 14 people were injured, and 59 others are still unaccounted for.

Initial statistics showed that as of 6 a.m. Thursday, 370 houses were destroyed and 2,904 others were damaged, and the economic loss that Conson brought to the Southeastern Asian country's infrastructure and agriculture amounted to 22.29 million pesos (US$481,633).

Weakening to a tropical storm after making its landfall on the Philippines late Tuesday, Conson is now out of the country, moving towards China's Hainan and Guangdong provinces.
