Kyrgyz interim deputy PM to resign for parliamentary election

BISHKEK - Kyrgyzstan's interim Deputy Prime Minister Omurbek Tekebayev announced Sunday he will step down on July 10 in order to run in the country's parliamentary election.

"I will resign on July 10, whichever a date is chosen for the parliamentary elections," Tekebayev said after casting his ballot in Sunday's referendum on a new draft constitution.

Tekebayev explained that his post in the interim government was set up specially to carry out the constitutional reform and would be closed in July.

He said that interim Interior Minister Bolot Sher will resign too.

Tekebayev also announced that the Ata-Meken Party, which he leads, will take part in the parliamentary election.

He added that the outcome of Sunday's plebiscite would be definitely positive.

Kyrgyz voters started to cast ballots in about 2,300 polling stations across the country on Sunday to determine the fate of a new constitution which would create a parliamentary democracy in Kyrgyzstan.
