Magnitude-7 earthquake hits Solomon Islands

BEIJING - A strong earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale struck the Solomon Islands Saturday at 1:30 pm Beijing time, according to China's Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter was at 10.6 degrees south latitude and 161.4 degrees east longitude with a depth of about 40 kilometers, the center said.
