ISTANBUL - A bomb attack on a bus transporting soldiers in Istanbul killed three people and injured six others on Tuesday, the semi-official Anatolia news agency said.

The roadside blast took place in the Halkali district in the European side of the city as a shuttle bus carrying military personnel from the military lodgings was passing by a cemetery, the report said.

It added that the three people died in the hospital while two of the six injured are still in serious condition.

Two of the victims were reported to be specialized sergeants while the other victim was reported to be the daughter of military personnel.

An investigation into the explosion is underway, according to the report.

The blast came a day after Turkish military forces began a major deployment of troops and elite forces along the border with Iraq, as fighting intensified between Turkish armed forces and militants of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
