MOSCOW - Russia is to install explosives detectors in the country's major metros as a part of security measures, the emergencies minister said on Friday.

The move follows the deadly blasts in Moscow metro in March, which claimed more than 40 lives and injured about a hundred. The twin blasts have sparked a national outcry as they proved insecurity of Moscow residents.

The new measures are believed to protect the citizens from possible terrorist attacks, and scientists and security services are developing new explosive detectors as the old ones allegedly do not detect all the explosives compounds, the minister Sergei Shoigu told a news conference.

Russia is planning to have a sophisticated security system on public transport by 2014.
