CANBERRA: Australia's government has approved the purchase of its first order of 14 Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft, Defence Minister John Faulkner said on Wednesday.

The A$3.2 billion ($2.9 billion) order will see the first planes delivered by 2014. Australia is considering buying up to 100 Joint Strike Fighters, and will consider the purchase of the next batch in 2012, Faulkner said.
