The strike began early Monday after more than 750 pilots rejected a mediation proposal by the national conciliator during the weekend following months of unsuccessful labor contract talks between the airline and the pilots' union.

The strike is expected to hit about 15,000 people on its first day and will ground all regular flights. Some leisure flights and charter traffic operated by the airline will not be affected.

The airline had canceled some flights already on Sunday. It says daily losses will amount to euro2-3 million ($3-4.5 million).

New mediation talks, which mainly hinge on the use of non-company personnel, were expected to begin later this week.
