WASHINGTON - A 5.2 magnitude earthquake rattled eastern Illinois before dawn on Friday, the US Geological Survey said, and television reports showed some minor damage.

There were no immediate reports of injuries from the quake which media reports said was felt in several states.

The quake was centered 5 miles northeast of Bellmont, Illinois, which is in the southeastern part of the state, along the Indiana border and near Kentucky.

It struck at a shallow depth of 7.2 miles, according to the USGS. The agency initially said the quake had a magnitude of 5.4 but later verified it at 5.2.

An NBC reporter in St. Louis, Missouri, said the quake was felt in that city located across the Mississippi River from Illinois' western border.
