Support for Fukuda's cabinet hits new low: survey

TOKYO -- The approval rating on the cabinet of Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has plunged by 6 percentage points to 24 percent, hitting the lowest level since March, showed a survey on Monday.
Disapproval of the cabinet rose by 6 percentage points to 57 percent from the previous survey conducted in March, when it rose above 50 percent for the first time, said the opinion poll conducted over the weekend by the Mainichi Shimbun.
Of the 1,061 respondents, 64 percent oppose the prime minister' s plan to restore provisionally raised gasoline and other road- related taxes after they expired March 31, while 32 percent agree.
