TOKYO - A strong earthquake struck a remote island southeast of Tokyo, the Meteorological Agency said Saturday. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The magnitude 6.3 temblor struck at 7:32 am Saturday near the remote island of Chichijima, about 600 miles southeast of Tokyo.

The agency the quake had the potential to trigger a very small, nondestructive tsunami, but no change in sea level had been observed three hours after the quake.

There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries. About 2,000 people live on the island.

Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries because it sits atop four tectonic plates.
