WASHINGTON -- US ambassador to Serbia Cameron Munter has asked the State Department to evacuate some diplomats from the embassy in Belgrade after a mob attack, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Friday.

Munter asked the State Department to let some diplomats and all dependents of all the American staff in the embassy to leave Belgrade, McCormack said, adding that the State Department is reviewing the request.

There are about 80-100 Americans working at the US embassy in Belgrade, according to US media.

Some protestors broke into US embassy in Belgrade and set fire on some offices on Thursday. The riot police came later, arrested some protestors and drove the rest away.

Serbia has condemned US recognition of the independence of Kosovo, a former province of Serbia.
