France says UN resolution strikes balance on Iran(AP)Updated: 2006-12-22 22:53 PARIS - France called Friday for a quick vote on a recrafted U.N. resolution to sanction Iran over its nuclear program, saying the text struck a balance between differing views within the Security Council. Foreign Ministry spokesman Jean-Baptiste Mattei said he did not expect a vote within a day, but that France wants it "in the briefest possible time." The text was revised to meet the concerns of Russia and China that the original proposed sanctions were too broad. A proposed mandatory travel ban against a dozen top Iranians involved in the country's nuclear and missile programs was dropped. Nevertheless, the French spokesman said the resolution would still send a "clear signal" to Iran. "We really have taken everyone's concerns into account," he said. "We feel that we are very close to a point of equilibrium." Russia said Thursday that it wants the vote postponed at least until Saturday because of several unresolved technical issues. As co-sponsors of the resolution, Britain and France can decide when to call for a vote. The resolution would order all countries to ban the supply of specified materials and technology that could contribute to Iran's nuclear and missile programs. It would also impose an asset freeze on key companies and individuals in the country's nuclear and missile programs named on a U.N. list. Iran insists its nuclear program is aimed solely at the peaceful production of nuclear energy, but the Americans and Europeans suspect Tehran's ultimate goal is the production of nuclear weapons. With Iran refusing to comply with an August 31 council deadline to stop uranium enrichment, Britain and France circulated a draft of sanctions resolution in late October, which has been revised several times since then. |
