UNITED NATIONS - The United States intends to introduce formally a revised UN Security Council resolution on Thursday to impose sanctions on North Korea in hopes the 15-member body will adopt it by the end of the week.

US Ambassador John Bolton told reporters after meeting with ambassadors from France, Britain and Japan on Wednesday, that despite disagreements, Pyongyang's announcement it had tested a nuclear device required a quick response.

China has been resisting some of the harsher measures, including a US proposal that nations be allowed to inspect cargo to and from North Korea to check for dangerous weapons.
