Bangkok ranks Asia's Best City
(Xinhua) Updated: 2006-10-06 19:25 Bangkok has been ranked the world's third
favourite city for tourists this year while retaining its title as Asia's Best
City for the fifth consecutive year, honors given by a world leading tourism
magazine.
Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin received "Asia's Best City 2006" award
from Travel and Leisure magazine of the United States Friday.
The world's leading consumer travel magazine surveyed tourists and readers'
opinion on the world's best tourist destinations through its website and
questionnaires.
In the latest survey, Italy's Florence and Rome won first and second places.
Two cities from Thailand entered the top five list, with Bangkok in third and
Chiang Mai coming fifth. For Asia, Bangkok was voted the best city while Chiang
Mai came second.
Other cities that made the top ten list of world's best tourism destinations
are Australia's Sydney, South Africa's Cape Town, Agentina's Buenos Aires, U.S.
city New York, Lebanese capital Beirut and U.S. city San Francisco.
Isara Sunthorwat, spokesman for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)
was quoted by Thai media on Thursday as saying that the awards proved that
Bangkok, which boasts beautiful scenery, unique culture and great food, is ready
to become the tourism hub of Asia.
