CAIRO - Eight people were killed Monday when two separate buildings collapsed in Egypt, police said.

Egyptian relief workers search for survivors amid the rubble of a six-storey building that collapsed in the Imbaba impoverished district of Cairo in January 2006. At least 8 Egyptians have died when two buildings collapsed in separate incidents, police said, adding that several people were still trapped under the rubble.[AFP]

A four-story building collapsed in the eastern Cairo district of Saraya Al Qubba, killing five people and injuring several others. Thirteen people were pulled from the rubble and taken to a nearby hospital.

Three others were killed in another building collapse in Qalyoub, some 20 kilometers (13 miles) north of Cairo.

Authorities gave no reason for the collapses but said police were investigating.

Building collapses are not uncommon in Egypt and are usually blamed on shoddy construction and a failure to respect regulations.
