LaBeouf alcoholic

Actor Shia LaBeouf, who was accused last week of disturbing a performance of the musical Cabaret in New York, is undergoing treatment for alcoholism, his publicist said on Tuesday. LaBeouf, 28, has voluntarily sought outpatient care for addiction, Melissa Kates, the former Transformers star's spokeswoman, said in a statement. The actor was arraigned last week on charges of disorderly conduct and harassment after police said he interrupted a performance of Cabaret inside New York's Studio 54, used obscene language and became belligerent when asked to leave.

What the pigs say

Vandals broke into a Maryland petting zoo this week and painted graffiti on a sow and her piglets, police said on Wednesday. The taggers used blue veterinary antiseptic spray to paint "Hello my pretty" on the 295-kilogram, 3-year-old mother at the Green Meadows Petting Farm in Monrovia, Maryland. Each of the 11, 7-day-old, piglets had a letter spray-painted on it, but farmer Ken Keyes, the Green Meadows owner, is not sure what word or words they might be. "It's some sort of message," he said. "I think it was high school kids." "I don't think it's a middle-aged couple that said 'let's go tag some pigs'." No animals were harmed. The vandals also stole a tortoise named Henrietta.

Kayaking thief

Police used a boat to catch a burglary suspect who made his getaway in a kayak in southern Minnesota. The 31-year-old man from Austin, Minnesota, was arrested on Sunday as he tried to kayak away from a restaurant with allegedly stolen items. Police say the restaurant was closed when an employee giving a tour interrupted a burglary. Officers found two people in kayaks on the Cedar River and got one to talk to them. That information led police to believe the second man was involved in the burglary. Police got a fire department boat and, with a firefighter driving, were able to catch the kayaker. Authorities recovered cleaning supplies and lighters apparently taken from the restaurant.

Bear stuck in jar

A frightened bear cub got its head stuck in an oversized cookie jar while rummaging through some trash and had to be rescued from a tree in New Jersey. Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Larry Ragonese says the 6-month-old cub apparently found the Animal Crackers jar the night of June 27 in Ringwood, near the New York border. As the 28-pound animal tried to eat what remained in the jar, he apparently pulled it over his head and it got stuck. The cub became spooked when approached and went up a tree, but got wedged about 40 feet up. DEP staffers arranged netting in case the bear fell to the ground. After the animal was tranquilized by a DEP biologist, it was brought down and local firefighters gingerly cut the jar off its head.
