A meeting of minds

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Friday met with former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger, the guest of honor at the Third Global Think Tank Summit in Beijing. Li said the world is undergoing complex and profound changes. Economic globalization, regional integration, and the liberalization and facilitation of trade and investment are the general trends, he said, and are a powerful driving force for addressing global financial problems and achieving an economic recovery. Kissinger responded that China's growth is crucial to the world.

Hunan

Landslide kills two

Two people were killed in a rainstorm-triggered landslide in Hunan province on Friday, local authorities confirmed on Saturday. The landslide happened at about 1 pm in Shuangqiao village, Liuyang, administrated by the provincial capital of Changsha. One person was rescued but two others were found dead after their houses collapsed in the landslide, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters. Rainstorms have battered the province since Monday and heavy rain is expected to continue until Sunday.

Egypt

Deaths mount

Two people, one an American, were killed when protesters stormed an office of Egypt's ruling Muslim Brotherhood in Alexandria, adding to growing tension ahead of mass rallies aimed at unseating the Islamist president. At least four people were killed and more than 160 injured on Friday in clashes between the supporters and opponents of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, raising the death toll to seven in one week, as the country is set to witness another mass anti-Morsi protest on Sunday.

Iraq

Suicide bomber kills 14

At least 14 people were killed and 32 others wounded on Friday in bomb attacks against a funeral and a checkpoint run by government-backed Sunni militiamen in Iraq, the police said. A suicide bomber driving an explosive-laden car tried to break into a funeral in Dujail, some 70 km north of Baghdad, a local police source said on condition of anonymity.
