Summer soundwaves

You are not getting the most out of the southern hemisphere's summer heat if you do not go for the SoundWave Music Festival in February. Headlining the 2013 event is Metallica, who will be joined by Linkin Park, Blink 182, Slayer, Anthrax, Sum 41, and some 15 other performers. They will perform at Sydney State Theater on Feb 24.

Artistic couple

Make time for the Toronto exhibition Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics and Painting, which is running until Jan 20.

The exhibition features more than 80 works on paper and paintings by Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Also on show are more than 60 photographs of the couple. The exhibits are based on Mexico's revolutionary culture during the 1920s and 1930s.

For Andy Warhol

John Cale, pioneer of various popular music styles, will curate Life Along the Borderline: A Tribute to Nico on Jan 16. Designed to let the "past and future collide", the performance aims to celebrate Nico, the legendary singer-songwriter and Andy Warhol protege. As part of the 30th Next Wave Festival, the musical performance will be joined by a roster of artists, including the Magnetic Fields, Yeasayer and Sharon Van Etten.

Cultural feast

The 2013 Huayi, or Chinese Festival of Arts, will bring together the most coveted stage plays. The event includes Edward Lam's Awakening, and Li Liuyi's rendition of Antigone and Eighteen Springs, which is adapted from Eileen Chang's namesake novel. The festival will also feature inspiring dances and visual arts by Chinese artists.
