Still searching after all these years

'The early Qing and the Communist government unified China under incredibly difficult circumstances. Western and American scholars were very caught up in the reasons for China's weakness then, but they didn't give a sense of how many times this has happened before. "Was it a regular event? Was it bound to separation and reconciliation again? Or was it possible to change China from the outside?"

Happy Happy Hippos

The Berlin Zoo recently welcomed a new addition to its hippo population. The baby was presented along with its mother to the general public earlier this month. Zookeepers say that the calf, despite not having a name yet, is very popular with visitors and has the potential of becoming a local celebrity. New hippo calves usually weigh in between 27 and 45 kilograms at birth. They learn to swim even before they learn to walk, so as to stay near their mothers in the water. Native to Africa, the hippo is among the largest mammals in the world. Mature animals can weigh more than three tons, and only the elephant, whale and rhinoceros are bigger. It is a naturally aggressive creature, especially when it comes to protecting its young. Currently, the hippo is threatened in the wild, because hunters prize both its meat and its ivory canines.

Time-Tested Style, wearable art

For a number of years, 10 Glenealy was the address of my neighborhood bar. Concealed by banyan trees along a steep slope from Lan Kwai Fong, it was the perfect pit stop for a nightcap on the way home. Last spring, bamboo scaffolding signaled a change. What eventually emerged was the whitewashed facade for Hulu 10: a fashion boutique that takes elements of Chinese culture and updates them for today's trends and lifestyles. The brand's mission is to preserve and promote Chinese culture for the Chinese. Even its name, meaning "bottle gourd", is significant, since the hulu fruit is organic, light and resilient.

During a lightning tour of the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay and Pompidou Centre last year, I made sure I hit all the art history 101 favorites. Theodore Gericault's Raft of the Medusa was high on the list, and finally seeing it was worth traipsing up and down the Louvre in search of it.
