Bette Midler to auction iconic stage costumes

Bette Midler's famous mermaid stage costume, the Valentino gown she wore to the 1992 Oscars and a collection of headdresses are all going up for auction in November, Julien's Auctions said on Tuesday. The singer and actress is also selling several stage costumes designed by Bob Mackie and outfits she wore on album covers dating back to the 1970s.

McCartney ex sued by hairdresser

Paul McCartney's ex-wife Heather Mills has been sued by a Los Angeles hairdresser who claims the former reality TV show contestant failed to pay as much as $80,000 as she pursued stardom in Hollywood. David Miramontes, who works under the name David Paul, claims in the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday that he worked for Mills starting in 2005 and quit in 2008 after she repeatedly failed to pay him, saying she had no money until her divorce from the former Beatle was finalized.

Man arrested for exit polling

Singapore has arrested a man linked to a popular socio-political website for conducting an exit poll ahead of the general election in May, the island's leading Sunday newspaper said. Joseph Ong Chor Teck was arrested for offences under the Parliamentary Elections Act and has since been released on bail pending further investigations, a police spokesman said, confirming a story in The Sunday Times.

Barnes wins 'posh bingo' prize

English author and bookmakers' favorite Julian Barnes finally won the Man Booker Prize for fiction on Tuesday, despite once dismissing the coveted award as "posh bingo." The 65-year-old triumphed with The Sense of an Ending, which at 150 pages was described by one review as a "novella."

Rapper jailed on drug charges

Rapper Soulja Boy was arrested on drug and weapons charges last week after a traffic stop in Georgia, police said. The 21-year-old entertainer, whose given name is DeAndre Cortez Way, and four crew members traveling in a Cadillac Escalade were pulled over near the Alabama line, police said.

Woman gets $4 for kin's death

A South Korean woman has been offered a little over $4 in government compensation for the death of her brother during the 1950-53 Korean War, embarrassing officials who say they were bound by an outdated law. The woman was 2 years old when her brother was killed in combat in 1950, but never knew of his existence until told of his death by a neighbor, local media reported, adding the children's mother has suffered from dementia.
