Tibetan scenes

Liu Guofu graduated from the Nanjing Academy of Fine Arts in the 1980s and was active in China's first wave contemporary art movement. Later he traveled a lot and lived away from the city. His recent paintings are about Tibetan culture and life. By singing praise for the lost beauty of the nature, he challenges today's consumerism and materialization.

Hong Kong

Trouble in paradise

Is there really a Shangri-La? Some imagine the contemporary art world to be a Utopian-like place where artists circulate unrestricted by nationality or ethnicity. Clare Harris argues otherwise in a talk based on her upcoming paper, Trouble in Shangri-La: Tibetan Artists' Travels in the Contemporary Artworld. Harris, a curator of Asian Collections at Pitt Rivers Museum, maintains that the art world is just like any other, with its own set of rules for inclusion and exclusion. For a group of contemporary Tibetan artists participating in international exhibitions, Shangri-La proves to be rude awakening.

Tickling the ivories

Even the most experienced pianists tremble in fear when faced with Rach 3. Rachmaninov's masterpiece is often hailed as the summit of piano concertos as it calls for poetry, nerves and stamina all in equal measure. The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra's performance of Rachmaninov Gala - Rach 3 will boast the talents of Macedonian virtuoso Simon Trpceski performing the work under the baton of Dutch conductor Lawrence Renes. Also on the program is Rachmaninov's second symphony, featuring a long and passionate melody for clarinet to the accompaniment of quiet strings.

8 pm, Sept 9, 10. Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, 10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. 852-2734-9009

Macao

Light fantastic

If you missed Encounters: Audiovisual Mapping of St. Paul's Ruins during this May's Macao Arts Festival, this is a great opportunity to catch a reprisal. The stunning light and sound show was commissioned by the city's Cultural Affairs Bureau and created by Barcelona-based Telenoika with support by Panda Artist Management. Using state of the art audiovisual technology, structured images and original music, the show recounts the history of Macao. Images projected onto the actual ruins against the backdrop of city lights offer a spectacular visual feast.

8 pm and 9 pm, Sept 4. Ruins of St. Paul's, Rua de Sao Paulo. 853-8399-6699
