Ye Shiwen lost to British Hannah Miley in 400m individual medley

ISTANBUL - Hannah Miley who less than three weeks after becoming European short course champion, added 400m individual medley world gold to her collection on Wednesday night at the World Short-Course Championships in Istanbul.

She had to withstand to China's double Olympic champion Ye Shiwen's incredible attacks during the race. The world record owner in the long course Ye tried to catch Miley at the free style relay but couldn't succeed and won the silver medal.

Miley hit the wall with a time of 4:23.14, while Ye remained only 0.19 seconds slower and became the second with 4:23.33. Katinka Hosszu took the bronze with a time of 4:25.95.

In women's 200m butterfly final Hosszu won gold medal with 2:02.20 and Chinese Jiao Liuyang took the silver in 2:02.20. Jemma Lowe from Britain with a time of 2:03.19 won bronze medal.

The United States ranked first at the men's 4x100m freestyle relay final with 3:06.40, Italy became second with 3:07.07 and Australia hit the world third with 3:07.27.

At the final of women's 4x200m freestyle relay final, the Americans once again ranked first and won the gold medal with M. Romano/C. Chenault/S. Vreeland/A. Schmitt with a time of 7:39.25. Russian team consisting of V. Popova/E. Sokolova/D. Beliakina/K. Yuskova became second with a time of 7:42.77. And China's Qiu/Pang/Guo/Tang finished third with 7:43.26.

In the 5 finals of the first day, the United States got 3 gold medels while Hungary and Britain had one for each.
