Chinese national coach Bob Donewald may rub some people the wrong way with his sometimes abrasive style, but retired former NBA all-star Jamal Mashburn is one of his biggest supporters.

They built a strong relationship during their days together with the Charlotte Hornets (now the New Orleans Hornets). Mashburn, the team's prolific forward recalled some fun days with Donewald, who was an assistant coach with the squad in the early part of last decade.

"He was a skinny and funny guy and he loved to talk. Bob was trying to hone his skills and understand the craft on how to be a coach then," said Mashburn, who worked with Donewald individually on shooting and footwork during their time together.

Being a veteran player, Mashburn never hesitated to provide advice to Donewald, who had just begun his NBA coaching career.

"I think I helped Bob understand how to deal with NBA life. He was so excited to get everybody together before the preseason camp started. I pulled him aside and told him, 'Hey, Bob, we are going to have eight months together, we don't have to do everything right now'," the 39-year-old said.

After being dismissed by CBA team Xinjiang Flying Tigers last month, Donewald's tactical proficiency was questioned by some of the local media. But the Chinese national squad coach was praised by Mashburn.

"Although I have lost contact with him, I would love to reconnect with him. He was a great guy and I really enjoyed my time with him. It's very rare that people admit and understand their mistakes and are willing to accept information from people who have been in that role before," said Mashburn.

Coming to Beijing for a basketball exhibition tournament recently, Mashburn said the capital city reminded him a lot of his hometown, New York.

"It looks like NYC times 10," he said. "It reminds me and I am assuming it was the reason why (Stephon) Marbury loves the city too. There's a certain energy and soul in the city. The buildings, the traffic, the subway, the restaurants, There are a lot of western brands here. People are active, they are on the move. Hopefully, one day I can come here and learn more about the culture and the landscape."
