Myanmar media hail winning of rowing gold in China

YANGON - Myanmar official media on Monday hailed the country's winning of a gold medal by a selected rowing team  in the 2011 First Asian Traditional Regatta Festival held in Fangchenggang of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region of China.

Myanmar stood first in the 10000m men's traditional 21-oar event while Guangxi placed second and Hong Kong third in the event which ran from May 29 to June 3.

A grand welcome for the victorious team was launched by officials of the Sports and Physical Education Department and the Myanmar Rowing Federation, said the New Light of Myanmar.

Seven teams from Cambodia, Singapore, Canada, China's Hong Kong and Guangdong Province, Chinese Taipei and Myanmar, 11 teams from Guangxi and three from Vietnam for a total of 21 teams participated in the festival.

Myanmar traditional boat race plays an important role in attracting tourists to the country.

Myanmar has started to compete in 16th SEA Game in Philippines in 1991.

Myanmar grabbed gold medals from 16th to 24th SEA Games which had been held since 1991 and pocketed most gold medals in 22nd SEA Games in Vietnam in 2003 and 24th SEA Games in Thailand in 2007.
