ASEAN countries want to host 2030 World Cup

JAKARTA - Delegations attending the 18th ASEAN Summit supported the idea of hosting the 2030 World Cup event in ASEAN countries, a statement from results of ASEAN foreign ministers meeting said here on Sunday.

"We heed up the idea to host 2030 World Cup event," the statement said.

In its history, the soccer championship of World Cup had never been held in ASEAN country. The only Asian countries held the championship were South Korea and Japan. They jointly held the championship in 2002.

The upcoming World Cup is scheduled in Brazil in 2014. Four years later, Russia would host the most popular sport event. It would be followed by Qatar in 2022.
