SEOUL - China's Olympic champion Wu Jingyu defeated Yang Shu-chun of Chinese Taipei 6-2 to win the gold medal in the women's 49-kg event Monday at the world taekwondo championships in Gyeongju, South Korea.
It was Yang's first international competition after she served out her three-month suspension. She was suspended by the World Taekwondo Federation last December after she was disqualified in her opening bout at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou for wearing extra electronic sensors in her socks.
"I got nervous because Yang Shu-chun is a good player. I'm glad that I won the first place after beating an outstanding player like Yang Shu-chun," Wu said after she won the gold medal.
"I have not decided yet whether to take part in the 2012 London Olympics, but if I qualify, it would be a great honor. I'll do my best," she added.
The 20th world championships, which runs between May 1-6, feature some 1,040 athletes from a total of 149 countries and regions.
This is the first time in 10 years that South Korea, the cradle of the sport, holds the biannual event after the 2001 edition in Jeju Island.
The athletes are divided into eight male and eight female categories for the preliminary round with the semifinals and finals taking place May 2-4.
