China wins 1 silver on last day of World Cup speed skating

CHANGCHUN, Jilin - China claimed only one silver medal Sunday at the 2010/2011 Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating event in Changchun, the capital of northeastern China's Jilin Province.

Yu Jing finished runner-up in 38.270 seconds in the women's 500m final to avoid the host nation finish empty-handed on the last day of the two-day competition.

Republic of Korea's Lee Sang-Hwa clinched the gold medal in 38.265 seconds.

"I am coming off an injury lay-off, so I did not skate well today," Yu said after the competition. "I will work harder in future to prepare for the Asian Winter Games."

Wang Beixing, the bronze medal winner in women's 500m in the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, finished a disappointing fourth.

"I am not in form because I couldn't train systematically since this summer. But I believe I will get better and better," said Wang.

In the men's 500m race, Tucker Fredricks from the United States took the title in 35.26 seconds, followed by Jan Smeekens from the Netherlands and Lee Kyou-Hyuk from Republic of Korea.

Stefan Groothuis of the Netherlands won the men's 1,000m in 1:09.39, ahead of teammate Simon Kuipers and Lee Kyou-Hyuk of Republic of Korea, who finished second and third respectively.
